Why Have a Jankar System?

The Jankar System is an essential tool for effective and sustainable development because:

  • Technology can easily be transferred to the community for adoption, filling up the technology gap between project and community.
  • Community gets immediate help in the implementation of project activities.
  • Fast tracking of activity in the village.

Output of the Jankar System

  • GVT’s experience in both EIRFP and WIRFP highlights the benefits of the Jankar system. Some examples where Jankar have contributed significantly and have made a positive impact are as follows:
  • A Jankar took initiative to secure watershed programmes from DRDA in two villages of Jhabua – Titwa and Naganwat.
  • Jankars regularly facilitate Government programmes like Pulse Polio, BPL survey, Literacy Survey, Sanitation Programme, Gram Swaraj (training).
  • Group members and Jankars have joined various committees in Gram Sabhas.
  • Jankars have got elected as Sarpanch and Panch in Gujarat project villages.
  • Rajiv Gandhi Watershed and Development Mission recognizes the Jankar system and has recommended its adoption as an integral part of the development process on a large scale.
  • A team of 18 Jankars (male and female) worked for 4-5 days in teams of 2-3 in different villages and conducted PRAs under the Food Security Mission.
  • Women’s Group Jankars have been elected to the Panchayat bodies, and have been selected for Anganwadi, Sachetak, Shiksha Karmi and for nursing training, etc.
  • Many of the Prasar Jankars have been selected by GVT as team members for conducting Impact Studies of project interventions.
  • Dissemination Jankars have been particularly effective in creating community awareness in surrounding villages, so that these communities have articulated their right to development from service providers including the government.
