Who is a Jankar?Jankar System

The Jankar is a para professional identified by the community, who serves as a internal catalyst, information bank, service provider, trainer, knowledge disseminator and innovator. A Jankar is a facilitator who
helps manage Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and their activities,
enhances community awareness about the suitability, adoption and monitoring of new technologies, and
establishes links with resource organisations.

How is a Jankar selected?

The Jankar, (male or female) is selected by the community from among its members, on the basis of her/his

  • Willingness to work.
  • Dedication to the community.
  • Ability to act as a service provider.
  • Vision /Skill of development.
  • Capacity to mobilise the community.
  • Acceptability to the group/community.
  • Ability to devote time and carry out duties effectively and efficiently.

Capacity building of the Jankar

Jankars are trained extensively in their chosen areas of interest and community need, so that they can fulfill their role effectively, which includes motivating the community to understand development needs.
